Our History

Here is an outline of the history of the Washington, D.C. Registry.

August 2001

  • New layout! (finally)
May 1998
  • Our traffic grew to over 1.2 million hits per month.
April 1998
  • Our traffic grew to over 1,000,000 hits per month.
  • We made a number of improvements to our free online classifieds and we averaged more than 10 new ads posted daily.
March 1998
  • We upgraded our chat room and added themes for our new nightly chat sessions.
February 1998
  • We released Version 2.0 of our Home Page Creator.
  • Our traffic grew to over 800,000 hits per month.
January 1998
  • We continued to grow.
December 1997
  • We added our new web post cards.
  • Our traffic grew to over 600,000 hits per month.
November 1997
  • We added the "Up-to-the-minute" section on the front page, where you can always find the very latest news, weather, traffic conditions, lottery numbers, and more.
  • We released the full (non-beta) version of the Washington Banner Network (WBN), which allows Washington, DC area web sites to advertise on other local web sites for free.
  • We gave the D.C. Discussion Forums an overhaul and a new look.
October 1997
  • We gave the first major facelift to virtually all of the Registry's pages in over 2 years.
  • Our traffic exceeded 400,000 hits per month for the first time.

  • We continued to add links to the Registry.
June 1997
  • We redesigned the front page to load much faster.
  • The Beta version of the Home Page Creator was released.
May 1997 April 1997
  • We released the final version of our new D.C. Registry Classifieds 2.0
  • Our traffic grew to 270,000 hits per month
  • We added a new column entitled Who Cares?
  • We gave ourselves a facelift and dropped the frames!

  • Our traffic grew to over 180,000 hits per month.
  • We were awarded the Top D.C. Site Award from the Washington Web!
  • We consolidated both the "No Frames" version for those with frames and the underlying version for those with frames-challenged browsers into the main front page.
  • We added a search feature for the Registry Classifieds, the D.C. Personals, the D.C. Job Board, and the D.C. Bulletin Board.
  • We released the Beta-test version of the brand new D.C. Registry Classifieds 2.0. These new Washington, D.C. online classifieds include personals, housing ads, employment ads, automobile ads, and much more. Users can now easily post new ads, modify their ads, and even remove their ads at any time. They're also searchable by price range, date posted, and category.
December 1996
  • We freshened our appearance for the frames version with a more stylish and easy-to-navigate table as well as a new magazine-style layout for the front page.
  • Our traffic continued to grow. In December, we received over 18,000 visitors and over 130,000 hits.
November 1996
  • We have been added to Submit-It!'s list of regional directories. Now, people who use the Submit-It! Gold service to register their home pages will be able to add their sites to the D.C. Registry.
  • We implemented a script that enables rotating banners on virtually all of our pages. This enables us to display over 24,000 impressions per month.
  • We added a server-side include to the bottom of each page that automatically shows when that page was last updated.
October 1996
  • Our traffic increased to over 10,000 visitors per month.
  • We updated our appearance and enhanced usability.
  • We joined The USA CityLink Project.
September 1996
  • The Registry Classified Ads opened for business.
  • The D.C. Job Board went online.
  • Our traffic increased to over 8,000 visitors per month.
August 1996
  • The brand new D.C. Chat, a live, real time chat room, went online. The old D.C. Chat was renamed the D.C. Bulletin Board.
  • The D.C. Personals was released.
  • Separate page created to feature web sites that have added the D.C. Registry button to their pages
  • Virtual D.C. page added to announce this upcoming new virtual reality world.
  • Affiliation announced with The D.C. News?.
  • All lists of personal home pages were purged of dead links.
  • New D.C. Power Brokers graphic introduced.
  • About the Registry page was changed to FAQ format and substantially upgraded.
  • This History page was created.
July 1996
  • The Search program was switched to our new web hosting provider.
  • Online statistics became available.
  • The Guestbook for visitors from around the world and for D.C. area residents without e-mail or home pages went online.
  • D.C. Bulletin Board, Washington's Electronic Town Hall, went online.
  • Newsletter was announced for circulation at a later date.
  • What's New page was added.
  • We had our first paying sponsor!
June 1996
  • Imagemap 3D graphic added to bottom frame (replacing 5 previous frames).
  • Registry moved to its new domain of DCREGISTRY.COM on June 24.
  • Hagen Communications became our sponsor
May 1996
  • Small icons added next to entries to indicate type of link (web, gopher, e-mail).
  • E-mail addresses now accepted for Washington, D.C. area residents
  • We joined the Internet Link Exchange
April 1996
  • Frames version released
  • Automated sonic greeting added
  • 3D Registry button added
  • D.C. businesses and organizations added
  • Traffic reached 60,000 hits per month
March 1996
  • We continued to add new names
February 1996
  • JavaScript added
  • Weather forecast graphic added
  • Registry redesigned with imagemap banner added
  • Search feature added
  • About the Registry page added

  • We added large numbers of personal home pages
September 1995
  • The Washington, D.C. Personal Home Page Registry was officially released on September 17, 1995. It's pretty scary, but we've put the very first version of the Registry online. Enter at your own risk, and if you choose to do so, please be aware of the following limitations:
    • Some graphics won't work anymore (notably the counter and a small graphic at the bottom of the front page
    • The registration form won't work anymore
    • The e-mail address links for the Registry won't work anymore
    • Many of the links to outside pages won't work anymore
