Who Cares? Vol. I, No. 3

Death and Taxes

It seems the only sure things in the House of Representatives these days are death and taxes. Well, the tax issue is an important one to discuss, so it is not the subject of today's column. However, I did get a good laugh over the weekend from Saturday's Republican radio address responding to the President's plan to hire people off of the welfare rolls. The Republican response, given by Dick Armey (perhaps they'll name the Republican Party after him one day!), was all about how the current tax system is screwed up and needs to be thrown out and rebuilt. It was an obvious ploy to get Jim and Jo-Bob Middle American's dander up, but it had absolutely nothing to do with the President's plan to hire people off the welfare rolls. Apparently, the President is actually doing something the GOP agrees with, and it's got them so nutty all they could do is talk about taxes. But onto other things...

Apparently the only other thing besides taxes the House of Representatives has on its mind right now is Death....Dr. Death that is. Last week, the report from Capitol Hill was that the House of Representatives had sent a strong message to Dr. Kevorkian - no Federal funding for doctor-assisted suicides. I am sure Dr. K was so shaken by this event that the blade came loose from his sickle. I just do not get it people. Why is the House of Representatives so concerned about the fact that people who are dying slow agonizing deaths do not want to live anymore? Who cares? Why does the House have a problem with people wanting to end their painful and miserable existence in a painless, peaceful, and dignified manner? I know, I know, it's because we are interfering with natural law, or that we're messing with God's will for these people, right? Wrong! It seems to me that we have already "interfered" with natural law or God's will by keeping these people alive in the first place with modern medicine! So why is it interfering any further to allow modern medicine to help these people realize their apparently pre-ordained destinies anyway?

I really don't care, and I believe the majority of Americans don't care, if people who are suffering and miserable want to die. It seems to me that the Congress has more important issues to waste our taxpayer dollars on. How about these stupid new ATM surcharges? What about campaign finance reform? How about getting people off of welfare? To Dick Armey and his troops on the Hill I say this: Leave Dr. K alone already! If anything, he is doing his part to help solve the welfare problem by opening up jobs for Americans! In fact, let's legalize Doctor-assisted suicides and I'll bet our Medicare costs will decrease too. And this great country of ours will certainly become less crowded and less polluted. Mr. Armey, leave Dr. Death alone, before the people send Dr. Death to Capitol Hill to put the Congress out of our misery. Until next time....
