Who Cares? Vol. I, No. 4
by
Sean Holt
The "Drill" Instructor
Has anyone besides me been following the case of the drill sergeant being court martialed at the U.S. Army's Aberdeen Proving Ground for having sex? Does it not bother anyone that the U.S. Army views adultery and sex with subordinates as a crime punishable with prison time? What is going on here? Who cares if people in the Army are horny and unfaithful! Don't get me wrong, I feel bad for this guy's wife, and if he actually raped his victims then he deserves prison time for that. But for adultery? And for having consensual sex? If we applied these same Old Testament- based punishments to the civilian world, our nation's gross national product would be zero because over half of our workforce would be behind bars! Obviously, the Aberdeen drill instructor either took his job title in a completely different direction than the Army intended, or this man needs some help. As more and more information is released to the public about some of the bizarre incidents he was involved in with trainees, it has become obvious to this analyst that the latter applies. This man apparently has a few sexual problems. But I sincerely hope the Army does not actually believe that putting someone in prison puts an end to their abnormal sexual behavior. Who are they kidding?!
Let's get some perspective on this issue. The Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. armed forces, including the U.S. Army, is President Clinton. That makes him the highest ranking officer in the military right? Whether we are Republicans, Democrats, or of an independent political affiliation, we are all pretty sure that the President has been less-than-faithful to his wife. So when does the court martial begin for Bubba? And how about that Senator from Massachusetts? If you think he's going to do any prison time for his escapades, er...uh...I mean crimes, I have a bridge in Chapp.....oh never mind! But because this drill instructor is not an officer, and therefore doesn't have important connections and probably cannot afford the best legal representation available, nor can he afford to pay off his victims, he is taking a hard fall for something that is an everyday occurrence in our society. The Aberdeen drill instructor obviously needs some sort of treatment or counseling. He certainly deserves to be demoted and possibly dishonorably discharged from the Army. But unless this man is found guilty of rape, do we really care if he is a sleazy adulterer enough to put him in prison? If so, I hope that we are prepared to let the crazies run the world while some of our most respected leaders are awaiting parole. Until next time...
