Who Cares? Vol. I, No. 5
by

Newt on the Dole
All that seemed to be on the morning news talk shows this weekend were in-depth discussions about the political impact of the big loan. What big loan you ask? Apparently, Bob Dole is loaning Newt Gingrich $300,000 to pay off his ethics violations penalties. Who cares? I do not really want to know where Newt is getting the money from! I think the better question is why? It seems to me there is a much larger issue here that is falling through the cracks because of the media frenzy over the tabloid-like story that "Uncle" Bob has stepped in to bail out his troublemaker "nephew" Newt. Does it not bother anyone besides me that the man who serves as Speaker of the House cannot come up with $300,000 to pay his debt to society? This man worked as a Congressman, author, and college professor all at the same time! In addition to his six-figure salary as a Representative, Mr. Gingrich had to bring in lots more money from those other ventures. It was reported this weekend that the First Lady made nearly one million dollars last year just on royalties from her book, and her book is not even a great read! I'm sure Newt's book is not a great read either, but he should have enough royalties from it to at-least pay off his debt. Now it is probably true that Newt is giving all of his royalties to some worthy charity (like the NRA) as the First Lady is, and this is probably why he personally has no cash from this venture. But what better charity to give some of the money to than his own cause? Have even the Republicans forgotten that it is not wise to help others when we cannot even help ourselves? What kind of fiscal policy is this anyway? Something is fishy here. I want Newt to show me the money!
And what is Bob Dole thinking? It just does not seem like a prudent investment to make a sizable loan to a man who cannot even hold onto the money he makes and, moreover, to a man who may be unemployed within two years! If Mr. Dole views this as a good fiscal policy for his own finances, what would he have done with the nation's finances had we elected him President last November? We would probably be giving loans to Saddam Hussein to help rebuild Iraq's "infrastructure" or to Israel to help push forward the peace process in the middle east...(oops!) The point is, I really do not care where Mr. Gingrich is getting his money from, but I do believe we need to look at the judgement of these two powerful individuals and ask ourselves if we want them creating and influencing our nation's fiscal policies. Until next time...
