Who Cares? Vol. I, No. 6

Whitewater Whitewater, Everywhere
It's happening again! Just when I thought the whole Whitewater farce was finally coming to an end, it has apparently been revived by Kenneth Starr for at-least another six months with the help of a new accusation against the Clintons by their former "business" partner Jim McDougal. How long has this investigation been going on now anyway? You guessed it, nearly five years. Five years and a lot of taxpayer dollars that is! And all because of an allegedly shady business deal that the Clintons entered into back in the mid-1980's which ultimately failed. Who cares?! What bearing does Whitewater have on how the President is running the nation? None. Zip. Zilch. Did the Whitewater allegations convince Americans in November 1996 that the President is not an honorable man and should not continue as our leader? Nope. So what is the big deal here? Why are we forced to listen to the media report about a lousy real estate deal in Arkansas day in and day out? Why is Kenneth Starr making a bundle of money off of John and Marsha American? And why does anyone care what Jim McDougal, a convicted criminal (perhaps the only one in the foamy Whitewater mess), has to say? If you said "politics" and "special interests" you have guessed right again.
The President seems to be doing everything right. The economy continues to grow, unemployment is under control, our national defense appears to be in-tact, and we appear to be carrying out sound foreign policy. So this is the only issue that the President's political enemies seem to be able to come up with (other than campaign finance violations which everybody who has ever been elected to anything in Washington seems to be guilty of). This is it? This is the big scandal? "Whitewater?"...ooooh...(yawn). Who cares about something that happened over ten years ago in Arkansas that has absolutely no bearing on the President's ability to run the country? I, for one, do not. Obviously the majority of American voters do not either, or we would all be curling up in front of the fireplace and lighting up our cigarettes to watch President Dole give the nation's State of the Union Address each winter. So can we please fire Kenneth Starr for wasting too much of our taxpayer dollars and let him go to that lucrative position he turned down earlier this year (would we really have missed him that much?), let the grand jury get on with their lives, and let the President run the country. From now on, let's leave issues which have anything to do with whitewater to the American Canoe Association. Until next time...
