Who Cares? Vol. I, No. 7

by

Just Remember This...at Election Time

Today's entry comes from the "gee I'm glad Congress is on the job" files. The entertainment industry's Variety magazine is reporting that Casablanca co-writer Julius Epstein has not earned a dime in residuals from the film. Yes, this is the appropriate time to shout it...who cares!? Well, in what appears to be the beginning of a beautiful friendship, the Congress apparently cares because they're listening to Mr. Epstein's proposal to change the U.S. Copyright laws to cover films made before 1960. And Mr. Epstein apparently knows Congress well, because he has enlisted the aid of film veteran Fay Wray in his attempt to lobby Congress. This would have no influence on the average Joe, but on the tired old members of the House who obviously still live in Ms. Wray's heyday, it is a big influence. Last week Epstein and Wray reportedly made a surprise appearance at a House Judiciary Committee meeting, and the room erupted in a standing ovation. My guess is the U.S. Copyright laws will be modified and re-ratified before Sam finishes playing.

This troubles me. There are some important issues out there that the Congress needs to be addressing. What's happening with the Balanced Budget amendment? What about the appropriations bills funding the U.S. Government for the next fiscal year? How about these stupid ATM surcharges? Well, while these issues are pressing to most of us, they are not for the Congress. In fact, the Congress is actually working on a bill that will fund the Government at 85 percent next year in the event that they don't agree on a budget by October 1. Yup that's right, our public "servants" on the Hill could actually be working out next year's appropriation, but they would rather spend their time working on a bill that will take effect in the likely event that an appropriation cannot be worked out by October 1 (still over five months away!). What's even more disturbing is that they will certainly get involved in the plight of Mr. Epstein and Ms. Wray while important business is left undone. I would like to see a Federal Employee surprise a House Committee and be welcomed by a standing ovation. Or a police officer or school teacher for that matter. But this Congess would rather spend their time hearing about how some guy made a bad business deal in 1942, and how important it is to fix his "problem" right away. People, I think it's high time to deal with this Congress by rounding up the usual suspects...and throwing the bums out in the next election. Until next time...
