Who Cares? Vol. I, No. 8

A Special Prosecutor to Investigate the Special Prosecutor
Before we get started with today's column, I would like to express my sorrow at the passing Tuesday of Chicago syndicated columnist Mike Royko. I have long been a fan of Mr. Royko's columns, and believe him to be the epitome of how the average Joe views the ridiculousness of many of our "respected" leaders. His words will be sorely missed by this fan, and by many others across the nation.
Now onto less serious things...the Congress...
The Congress, and more specifically the Senate Judiciary Committee, and more specifically yet Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah, is putting the pressure on Attorney General Janet Reno to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate alleged campaign finance wrongdoings in the Clinton Administration. In fact, several members of the House are calling for a special prosecutor to investigate the Attorney General herself, for not appointing a special prosecutor to investigate alleged campaign finance wrongdoings in the Clinton Administration. Is this starting to sound silly to anyone else? It better be, because it is! The election is over people, let's get on with our lives...who cares what has already happened?! What is more important is that we fix the problem so that this doesn't happen again in the future.
Haven't we learned yet that special prosecutors are a HUGE waste of taxpayer dollars? Remember the Ollie North case? All of that time and money wasted to make special prosecutor Arthur Lyman even wealthier than he already was. And how about Whitewater? Kenneth Starr has found the Clintons' folly to be so lucrative that he recently turned down a six-figure salary with a large company to stay on the case. Who knew that a lousy piece of real estate in Arkansas would turn out to be such a good investment for Mr. Starr! It's as if we need a special prosecutor to investigate these special prosecutors! But now the Congress wants to appoint yet another friend of theirs...oops, I mean another special prosecutor to go after the Clinton Administration for alleged campaign finance wrongdoings. And if the Attorney General doesn't cower in fear and appoint one for them, they're going to appoint one to investigate her! I have a better solution. Let's all admit that we've done something wrong when it comes to campaign finance, and let's enact legislation to fix it. How about we start by making sure that it doesn't take a millionaire to be a Senator. That way, all of those millionaires wouldn't be appointing their millionaire friends to make even more millions off of the hundreds of millions of us! Until next time...
