The Hammond Institute of Music and Fine Arts, Inc. is an integral part of the cultural life of Washington, D.C. and nearby Maryland and Virginia. Its purpose is to develop and execute programs to enhance the community's knowledge and appreciation of music, the visual arts, speech and drama for children and adults. Founded in 1916 by Mrs. Isabelle Robinson Hammond and incorporated in 1921, the Institute, a non-profit organization, from its earliest days has offered courses in piano, theory and community singing. In recent years, courses in the creative arts, violin, drama, speech and self-improvement have been added. During the 86 years of its history, the Institute has enrolled hundreds of students from the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area. The Institute not only has graduated accomplished musicians and artists, but also has enriched the lives of citizens in the community.
